I have always loved being a Rotary Volunteer! One of my favourite positions was Chair of Communications, during 2016-2017 for the Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown Chapter.
That year was a very busy one for the club and their annual stampede barbecue was their biggest yet. The club received the most publicity for their Stampede event to date. It has been an honour to serve the community as a Rotarian. To learn more and consider joining, visit: https://rotaryclubofcalgary.org/
Rotary Club of Calgary News & Information Update, for immediate release – March 26, 2016.
Stampede Barbecues- Stampede Roundup & Oxford Stomp
The Rotary Club of Calgary Barbecues, perhaps better known as The Stampede Round Up and Oxford Stomp have become long standing Stampede traditions and are widely considered ‘must attend’ events during Stampede. What once started as a great get together, with an emphasis on fellowship for members and fundraising for the long standing Service Club. As members often say “it feels good to be working as a team to achieve the goal of fundraising while being part of a fun event”.
The Stampede Roundup (July 13) and Oxford Stomp (July 15) offer world-class entertainment to Calgarians, bringing internationally renowned performers to the stage, in an outdoor music festival format! Past performers include Journey (Roundup), Sheryl Crow (Stomp), Bryan Adams (Roundup), George Thorogood & The Destroyers (Stomp), Def Leppard (Roundup), Goo Goo Dolls (Stomp), John Fogerty (Roundup), and many more. Artists for 2016 will be announced on April 19 (Stampede Roundup) and May 2 (Oxford Stomp).
The Rotary Club of Calgary is one of Canada’s largest non profit organizations with initiatives ranging from their Stay In School Program, International Scholarships, Youth Exchange, World Community Service, Feed The Hungry Calgary, Rotary Club of Calgary Employment Partnership Program, Services for Seniors, and many more as well as supporting many other local organizations and community initiatives. One of the Club’s current projects is the Rotary/Mattamy Greenway, a 138-km network of parks and pathways that will encircle the city connecting 55 communities and will include off-leash dog parks, family fitness parks, educational wetland interpretive areas, and unique play structures.
Celebrating its 21st year in 2016, The Stampede Roundup offers world-class entertainment to Calgarians, bringing world renowned performers to the stage, in an outdoor music festival format! Widely regarded as ‘the hottest ticket in town’ we are proud to deliver exceptional experiences during Stampede!
With the recent downturn in the economy, it is more important than ever before to raise funds for Rotary initiatives, and the club expects to generate over $300,000 from the Stampede events in 2016. The Rotary Club of Calgary has been doing barbecues since the 1950s, both as fundraisers and for fellowship for club members. The Club’s Fundraising Director, Gord Graham, has been involved with the barbecues since he was 15 years old, and can remember the very first Stampede Breakfast, the Hays breakfast, the 66th of which will take place this year. Many still have copies of the famous 1964 Rotary Cookbook, which was sold at the barbecues, just one of the many things that have left an imprint on Calgary culture. The Barbecues are a significant part of the history of the Calgary Stampede as the Club is for Calgary. As Bill Arden wrote to Toronto Rotary Club President Bill Paese in 1905, “A Rotary Club would be a good thing. It would make a real town out of Calgary”, and it certainly has. The Barbecues today, attended by over 35,000 each year are certainly still a significant part of the Calgary Stampede.

Currently, the Rotary Club of Calgary provides countless volunteer hours and distributes over one million dollars a year to its local and international service programs. One of the club’s major local programs was the Rotary / Flames Gift to the Community – a ten million dollar community investment. This partnership helped to build the Rotary / Flames House, the first pediatric hospice in Alberta, and the Rotary / Flames Park at the new Ronald McDonald House adjacent to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. This Rotary Flames partnership included other Calgary Rotary Clubs and also supported the Reach initiative which included Project NeuroArm, the world’s first image-guided surgical robot, and numerous other innovative medical initiatives like the world class Southern Alberta Urology Centre.
Internationally, the club is involved in Eradicating The World of Polio, The Signature Legacy Water projects providing clean water, health education and in country training for sustainable and self expanding clean water programs in Cambodia, Indonesia and Uganda with its partner CAWST – The Calgary based Centre for Affordable Water & Sanitation Technology.
