So what is PR? I get asked this question a lot, and there’s often confusion around the difference between marketing and public relations. So what is the difference?
Public relations is the strategic communication and techniques and tactics employed to manage information about an individual or business and the way that information is shared. That information is shared for various purposes related to your overall strategic plan to your audiences including the media, your employees, investors, government bodies, the community and your customers. These communications are aimed at building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships.
PR focuses on creating a positive image and greater awareness for the company or individual, while marketing is focused on selling products or services. Great public relations may result in selling more products or services, but there are different objectives. While there are absolutely some overlaps between the two, inevitably, however, your PR representative speaks to different audiences depending on the company’s needs, while the marketing team will be solely focused on reaching customers and generating sales. For instance, they may create a positive outreach with the media, company stakeholders or even employees while the marketing team may focus on advertising and email marketing.
